Welcome back, John McCain. It seems like just yesterday that McCain was facing a tough re-election bid and long-jumping to the right of J.D. Hayworth. “Complete the danged fence,” he said in a 2010 cam­paign ad. Three years — and one presidential election in which the GOP got a glimpse of its future — later, the McCain of old is back. The sound bite has given way to a sweeping proposal, a statement of principles aimed at doing something, finally, about illegal immigration in this country.

Article on Medicaid had facts backward

he Republic’s “fact checkers” would have a hard time finding the facts in Tom Jenney’s Medicaid “My Turn”column on Saturday.

I appreciate that editorial pages strive to be provocative, but Jenney’s article was over the top. There is so much at stake with Gov. Jan Brewer’s decision to expand Medicaid, and countless details still to be worked out. Providing a venue for this sort of misinformation is destructive.

City may consider tax for arts, culture – Revenue would fund long-planned Scottsdale tourist sites

Scottsdale has relied on tax in­creases to pay for projects ranging from the McDowell Sonoran Pre­serve to an expansion at WestWorld.

Now supporters say a sales tax dedicated to arts and culture could bankroll marquee attractions such as a Desert Discovery Center and Western-themed museum that have fallen by the wayside during cash­strapped times. In coming weeks, City Council­woman Linda Milhaven wants to create a citizens’ task group to ex­plore an arts-and-culture tax that would generate millions of dollars a year.
