Arizona lawmakers are awaiting a summons from Gov. Jan Brewer to gather at the Capitol on Tuesday to consider removing one or more members of the Arizona Independent Redistricting Commission.

A special legislative session to take action against the independent commission would be unprecedented.

Scottsdale may remove airport commissioner

The Scottsdale City Council will consider removing a city advisory-panel member from his position because he lodged a complaint with federal officials over the council’s vote to allow an apartment complex near Scottsdale Airport.

The council last week agreed to consider removing John Washington from the Scottsdale Airport Advisory Commission when it convenes for its regularly scheduled meeting Tuesday.

Phoenix City Council votes to keep 2% food tax in place

Residents in Phoenix will keep paying a 2 percent tax on their groceries after the City Council voted Tuesday to keep the controversial food tax in place.

Hundreds of Phoenix firefighters and residents packed Council Chambers urging elected officials to keep the food tax to prevent cuts to public safety and other city services and programs.

Pinal County Sheriff Babeu considering run for House

Pinal County Sheriff Paul Babeu, who quickly rose to national prominence as a leading advocate of tough border security and immigration enforcement and more recently gained attention as a sharp critic of President Barack Obama’s administration over the “Fast and Furious” gun-smuggling scandal, announced Monday that he is considering running for Congress.

GOP alienating Hispanic voters

Immigration rhetoric from GOP presidential candidates has soared over the top and into the stratosphere. Republicans must be betting they won’t need Latino voters in the future. We think it’s a bad bet.

Latinos are the fastest-growing demographic group in the country, and they are unlikely to forget which party produces madcap ideas such as erecting an electrified fence between them and the country where many of their grandmothers live.
