ASU award finalists learned from recession’s tests

Whether they are winners of Spirit of Enterprise Awards on Tuesday or not, these entrepreneurs have one thing going for them.

Businesses that make it through tough economic conditions like those Arizona has experienced over the past four years have a “heightened awareness” that it takes more work to survive on your own, said Gary Naumann, director of Arizona State University’s Spirit of Enterprise Center at the W.P. Carey School of Business.

International business group rebranding with new name

An organization aimed at developing international business connections is being rebranded and will hold a coming-out party to mark its re-entry into the Valley community.

The Arizona Council for International Visitors, previously known as the World Affairs Council of Arizona, is hosting the bash next week with the goal of bringing members and leaders together.

In this year’s redistricting process, code words abound.

The most significant coded phrase right now is “communities of interest.” The communities-of-interest guideline is one of the state Independent Redistricting Commission’s six criteria for redrawing political maps. It is not at the top of the list of importance, nor is it at the bottom. Like the criteria of competitiveness, it must be weighed against respect for geographic boundaries and compactness.

Regulators propose easing up on solar incentives APS offers

Utility regulators have proposed easing up on the incentives that Arizona Public Service Co. offers to help pay for solar panels on homes and businesses, which has prompted immediate protests from solar companies.

The monthly tariff that residential APS customers pay to fund solar projects still is likely to increase in 2012 to about $5.54 a month from about $4 a month, but the amount of money for incentives is not as much as some of the solar-installation companies had expected.
